Current Rule: The Free Agent Draft order is the same as the Rookie Draft.
Proposal: Starting with the 2023 drafts, after the lottery and before the annual roster cut-down week, the winner of the draft lottery chooses if they want the first pick in the Rookie Draft or the Free Agent Draft. Whichever draft is chosen, the first four picks in each round of the other draft will be in the inverse order. So if the lottery winner chooses the Rookie Draft, the team picking 1st in the Rookie Draft will pick 4th in the Free agent Draft, the team picking 2nd in the Rookie Draft will pick 3rd in the Free Agent Draft, the team picking 3rd in the Rookie Draft will pick 2nd in the Free Agent Draft, the team picking 4th in the Rookie Draft will pick 1st in the Free Agent Draft.
Justification: The team winning the Draft Lottery has a significant advantage by having the first pick in both drafts. This would force them to choose which draft they want the first pick in, knowing they do not get the first pick in both.
Team A wins the draft lottery Team B is second in the draft lottery Team C is third in the draft lottery Team D is fourth in the draft lottery
Team A chooses the Free Agent Draft to have the 1st pick
The draft order of for the first four picks in the Free Agent Draft is 1 Team A 2 Team B 3 Team C 4 Team D
Since the lottery winner chose the Free Agent Draft to have the first pick, the draft order of the first four picks in the Rookie Draft are in reverse of the Free Agent Draft, or: 1 Team D 2 Team C 3 Team B 4 Team A
Remember it’s always important not to get to emotionally attached to new proposals it’s a process. The league is a great league. This time of year is my least favorite. You know when you were a kid, there were always the kids at recess that argued about a point, then suddenly recess was over and you never got to really play ball.
I have no problem with anyone disagreeing with ideas as long as they respect the person expressing those ideas. I am happy people in this league understand the difference and glad to be part of it.
